Plein air painting requires an approach that is somewhat unique; it also poses many of its own difficulties. How do you choose your subject? What is the best way to set up? How do you compete with the changing light conditions? How do you translate the vast outdoors onto a small canvas? These kinds of questions will be addressed during the workshop, and the majority of the time will be spent painting at different locations in Colorado Springs. In order to avoid bad weather, we will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day. Meet at Cottonwood with your supplies for the first day.

This workshop will explore my process of painting figures in the landscape, including the differences between painting outdoors and painting indoors. We will hopefully spend much of the time painting live models outside (depending on weather), but will also practice in an indoor setting. Lighting differences will be talked about in depth, as well as how color is affected by the different kinds of light sources. We will also discuss how to best use photography in these settings to serve as source material for studio work.
