I had the pleasure of teaching a fun weekend workshop recently, painting the Malibu coastline here in California. We gathered at Leo Carrillo State Beach. It’s a great location with lots of beautiful views for plein air painting. And it’s accessible from Ojai and the Los Angeles area.
Plein air painting is always a good challenge. But this workshop was a good opportunity to focus on the particular challenges of painting coastal locations. Atmospheric perspective, coastal colors, changing tides. We also learned to keep an eye on the seagulls — they almost got away with one student’s brushes!
We were tired by the end, but I think we all enjoyed learning some new things and putting them into practice on the spot.

Thanks to Nicole Ferrante for the great photos of our Malibu group!

It was a wonderful weekend Dan. I really enjoyed meeting the other painters and, as always, your observations and instruction were terrific. Thank you.
